About Manuel

I was born in Belize in the early 1990s, about a decade after the country won its independence from Britain. Belize sits where the Caribbean meets Central America and belongs to both, and it is the only country in Central America whose official language is English.

Today I make my home in Compton, California, a city of about 96,000 people at the heart of Los Angeles County, long known as the Hub City. Most of my neighbors there are Latino or Black.

My roots are West Indian and Afro-Latino. One word carries the English-speaking Caribbean; the other carries African heritage handed down through Latin America. I came to the United States from Belize as an immigrant and I am an American citizen.

I was raised by my family and my community, and I have siblings. I am married and have no children.

I trained as an emergency medical technician, worked as a caregiver looking after people who needed help day to day, and worked in warehouse logistics, keeping freight and stock moving. At home, I am the family handyman.

I wrote the novels. The covers and chapter engravings are AI-generated illustrations, made from briefs I wrote from the novels and approved myself; Research and fiction gives the full credit.

AI was used for prose, editing, and artwork in both books under my direction. Research and fiction gives the existing credits.

The books

Book I · Neo New Orleans · 84 chapters

DISSONANCE

In the Mud of Neo New Orleans, every ward keeps time by its pump. On Sabine Row in Ward 7 the stroke runs forty a minute, and you can feel it through the floor. Above the wards sit the Canopy decks.

The Anvil is a big household on the corner of Palmer and Dauphine: a kitchen, a clinic and a workshop. Yvonne Celestin keeps the clinic lamp and the shrine. Marcel De La Rosa, nineteen, mends whatever the ward carries through the door and lives on a heart with a history of its own. Nox has come home after eleven years with the pockets of his jacket sewn shut.

Book II · The corridor · 96 chapters

The Fourth Rail

“I am Ayida.” That is how the book begins. Ayida gathers what people tell her beside water, and since the Aftertone she can stay with a story long enough to hear the rest of it. She has no eyes. The first tellings reach her in Gotham, at the harbor steps, at a ward’s water riser, and in the tank of an old rail car.

It is the summer of 3004. Three Strongholds grew up along the corridor, Gotham, Liberty and Garden, each with its own language, and they are at war. In Gotham the lifts are failing in the heat and the war office is checking household registers floor by floor.
